RLS HOST WILTSHIRE FOR COUNTY MATCH

Royal Leamington Spa Bowls Club was the venue for the Warwickshire County Women’s friendly match against Wiltshire on Tuesday 29 June.  After welcome refreshments the teams were on the green in superb summer weather. The match was initially being played for 18 ends due to the heat but this was extended to 19 to enable the kitchen staff to have more time to prepare the meal.

Rink 1 had a real nip and tuck game, losing first two ends gaining next 2, then losing 1 end and gaining 2.  This continued throughout the game.  The skip Ros Taylor (Avenue Coventry) kept her team of Elaine Taylor (Stoke), Pat Dahlgren (Bilton) and Margaret Grosvenor (Lillington) going right to the end, finishing with an 18/16 win.

Rink 2 after gaining 1 shot on the first end were 8 shots down on the 7th end. The team of Christine Harding (Rugby Thornfield), Linda Linney (Stratford)), Denise Judge (Bilton) and Maureen Edwards (Rugby Thornfield) pulled themselves together and the opposition only gained 5 shots on the remaining 12 ends resulting in an 17/14 win.

A draw of 14/14 was the result on rink 3, again another slow start, not scoring until the 6th end then Gill Maund (Sherwood Park) rallied her team of Sigrid Thomas (Rugby Thornfield), Debbie Bloxham (Stratford) and Pat Lowe (Rugby Thornfield) to gradually draw level on the 17th end then both teams scoring alternatively 1 shot on the 18th and 19th end.  A well fought draw.

County Badge Donna Kerr presents Sandra Payne 134x225Sandra Payne (RLS) leading on rink 4 received her County Badge by playing this game and was on a winning rink. Her team consisted of Margaret Boldy (Avon), Donna Kerr (County President) and Skip Sue Hornsby (both Lillington), they all played a steady game keeping ahead of  their opponents until the 16th end when Wiltshire drew level at 11 all.  Out of the next three ends Warwickshire won two ends gaining 2 more shots whilst Wiltshire only one end gaining 1 shot giving a result of 14/12.

Janice White (RLS) was in control of Rink 5 along with Joy Cooke (Sherwood Park), Jean Veart (Nuneaton) and Trish Jarvis (Wolvey). Their opponents restricted them to winning 8 ends, their best end being end 11 when they picked up 4 shots putting them briefly in the lead and level on points at the 13th end.  However this wasn’t enough to hold their opponents who won overall 12/15.

A draw was the result on Rink 6 - 15/15 Thelma Orberson (Avenue Coventry), Karen Rice (Entaco), Elspeth Summers (Stratford upon Avon) and Jenny Corn (Lillington) contested this rink pulling ahead by gaining 5 shots at the 14th end giving Warwickshire a lead of 2 shots 13/11 but in the remaining ends Wiltshire gained 4 shots and Warwickshire 2 giving an honourable draw.

The meal and the speeches after the meal were well received, Wiltshire President commenting that had we finished at 18 ends as originally planned they would have won the match by one shot instead of the 90/86 win for Warwickshire!
